Subject: Launch of COPAC (the new CURL OPAC)

COPAC: The Launch of a new National OPAC

COPAC, the new national OPAC, was officially launched on Tuesday April 30th
at a seminar in the John Rylands University Library, University of Manchester.
COPAC is based on the union catalogue database of the Consortium of
University Research Libraries (CURL). The development has been funded by
the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).

The launch was addressed by Professor Martin Harris, the
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, Mr. Derek Law, Chair
of the Information Systems Sub-Committee of the Joint Information
Systems Committee, Mr. Reg Carr, Librarian of the University of Leeds
and Secretary of CURL, and Mrs. Sarah Davnall, CURL OPAC Project
Leader. One of the driving forces behind the development of COPAC has
been the shared objective of both JISC and CURL to provide universal
access to the important research collections held by the CURL
libraries. This was reflected in the presentations, which all
emphasised the importance of cooperation and collaboration in order to
provide the best possible service to the user community, particularly
important in circumstances where libraries are increasingly
interdependent because of financial restrictions. In token of this
collaboration the Heads of Agreement on which COPAC is founded were
signed by Reg Carr (for CURL) and Derek Law (for JISC).

COPAC currently gives access to the combined university library
catalogues of:

   Cambridge
   Edinburgh
   Glasgow
   Leeds
   Oxford
