Dear Libraries FP4 project coordinator,

This is the second announcement of this workshop, containing also the
confirmed agenda to the meeting (with speakers). Could you please
distribute it among your project partners and also other contacts that
might be interested in the meeting?

Digitisation of materials (text and images) held in libraries has been
an
important research topic for libraries programmes under both FP3 and
FP4.

An early study1 published in 1992, set the background for storage
technologies, for associated technical standards, and identified some of
the key issues surrounding retrieval and access. These were followed up
in
a concertation workshop held in Luxembourg in November 1994 which
brought
together 12 projects from EU and national programmes to discuss early
experiences in document imaging and delivery.

Since then, the growth of the Internet and the predominance of Web
technologies have dramatically changed the technical context for
services.
More recently, the importance of digital content, including that held in
libraries, museums and archives, is recognised in the development of Key
Action 3: multimedia content and tools of the Information Society
Technologies Programme, under FP5.

I am, therefore, pleased to invite you to attend the above workshop on
digitisation to be held on 14 December 1998, in the Euroforum Building
Luxembourg.

Participation in this event is free of charge. However, please note
that
we will not be reimbursing the cost for travel and subsistence but as
this
event is intended for concertation purposes, the cost of participation
can
be met from the appropriate resources in your project budget. This
workshop
covers an important topic for present and future work and I therefore
encourage you to participate.

I kindly ask you to return the registration form that is attached, as
soon
as possible as space is limited and we wish to
allocate priority to ongoing projects. We will send out confirmations
and
further background information early in December.
