Dear Mr. Schaarwaechter:

I may have misunderstood the work of the "Internet German Libraries List."
If so, I apologize and hope that you are not inconvenienced by this letter.
I need help finding the right library in Germany and the German Libraries
List was the only reference I found. If you cannot help me perhaps you know
another group who could do so?

I am translating Theodor Fontane's History of the 1864 war in
Schleswig-Holstein. Maj. Dr. Antulio Echevarria, Asst. Professor at the U.S.
Military Academy at West Point, NY, is editing my work for publication. We
need strategic and tactical maps and illustrations to bring Fontane's work up
to date. We have not been able to find any sources in the U.S. I am
wondering if the German Libraries group can help us find the sources we need.
If not, we are hoping you can refer our request to someone who can help us.

Most of the books we need were published between 1864 and 1889. I have a
list of titles taken from works by other authors (in particular Gerd Stolz --
DAS DEUTSCH-DANISCHE SCHICKSALSJAHR 1864) and could provide the list if you
need to see it before you know if you can help us.

I also have a list of artists from paintings, drawings, lithographs and from
some photographs published in Stolz's book. They represent exactly the kind
of illustrations that we need for our translation of Fontane. Many of the
artists listed may be artists who illustrated newspapers and news journals
during 1864. I cannot find that out.
I cannot find any address for German newspaper archives.

We are most interested in reprints of some of the old books about the 1864
war -- particularly those books with maps and illustrations. If you think
the Library group could help us, please let me know how we would go about
putting our request on their agenda.

If you have any other suggestions about how we should find these old books
(and possible reprints) please let me know. We would especially like to
know if there is a German State Military History Archive where such old
books are kept for research and from which we might obtain copies of maps
from the Generalstaff collection. .

If you cannot help us, can you give us the address of anyone else who might
know where to find what we need?

If you need more information about our project or if you would like our list
of books and artists, please let us know.
