ich las vor kurzem Teile einer Konversation auf meiner
neuseeländischen Liste über die Erfahrungen die Bibliothekare mit dem
Tauschen von Stellen, vor allem ins Ausland, gemacht haben.
Solch ein Tausch kann anscheinend sowohl Job als auch Haus und Auto
der Person miteinbeziehen und würde professionell und persönllich
sicher einige wertvolle Erfahrungen mit sich bringen.
Ich frage mich nun generell ob deutsche Bibliotheken und Bibliothekare
auch Erfahrungen mit Stellenaustausch, also job-swaps, gemacht haben,
oder diese in Erwägung zogen/ziehen würden?

Well! That has to be one of the best postings I've ever done.
Thankyou so much to those who replied to me. I do intend replying to
you all personally because - yes I do have more questions for you all.
How come we have never heard these stories before?
And now I rather regret clarifying my request because the emails from
people whose wishes to job swap haven't quite worked made me realise
that there are stories there too.
And though I did not set out to collect stories....I really had just
been idly wondering ...
Anyway, my next little set of questions:
I really would like to know if institutions have policies on job swaps
or whether it is up to the intrepid to put their toe in the water to see
what happens? Or, is it that there is no policy but an unspoken
understanding? Or something different again?
From the replies I received from librarians who did come from overseas
to NZ, I am wondering if international job swaps are more popular in
North America, UK or Europe? And it is distance from anywhere that
makes it more difficult for NZ librarians? If a librarian from the UK
wanted to go somewhere in Europe or the US there might be more than one
or two responses?
I would also be interested in hearing from people who have thought of
doing an international job swap but didn't pursue it and those who did
pursue the idea but never found a suitable - or any - swap.
Once again, I really am delighted with the responses. It may take a
little bit of time but I will get back to you all.
(I'm now beginning to wonder about job swaps generally - within the
country and within institutions! Oh dear.)

I'm happy to paste below my brief comments, sent to to Mary Cain, on a
2005 exchange I undertook with a librarian in Penrith, Sydney.
I recall writing a report for Aoraki Librarians and possibly Library
Life (probably done in 2006).

'I swapped with a Sydney based librarian in 2005, with strong library
management support (College of Education). I think that Australia is
easier though - working arrangements, tax details , schooling for
children were all fairly simple. I even visited the library and area
beforehand, which would not be so affordable for northern parts of the
world.
I posted e-mails to 2 Aust. state-wide library lists (NSW and Vic.) and
received 5-6 replies. I quickly shortlisted those to 2 stronger options
and took it from there. It was a job+house+car swap, so fairly 'full
service' as far as these things go.
But it was over a year of effort and planning overall, and things could
have changed for either party during that time!'
