Das Jahr 2014 wird weltweit von der Erinnerung an den Beginn des Ersten 
Weltkrieges vor 100 Jahren geprägt sein. Anlässlich des bevorstehenden 
Gedenkjahres findet am 30. und 31. Januar 2014 in der Staatsbibliothek zu 
Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz die Konferenz "Unlocking Sources - The First 
World War online & Europeana" 
(www.unlocking-sources.eu/<http://www.unlocking-sources.eu/>) statt.

Auf der zweitägigen internationalen Konferenz diskutieren Vertreterinnen und 
Vertreter aus Wissenschaft und Bildung zusammen mit der interessierten 
Öffentlichkeit über die Vermittlung von Geschichte im Internet. Dabei geht es 
vor allem um digitalisierte Bestände, die in der Europeana zugänglich sind - 
und wie sich diese Quellen z.B. in der Forschung oder im Geschichtsunterricht 
nutzen lassen.

Fokus der Konferenz:

Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus Forschung und Lehre, Geschichtsvermittlung und 
Bildung werden sich über die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen digitaler Zugänge zum 
Ersten Weltkrieg austauschen und die Beiträge, die hierzu in den vergangenen 
Jahren geleistet wurden, aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchten.

Im Mittelpunkt der Konferenz stehen Fragen zur Nutzung digital vorliegender 
Quellen: Wie passen sich digitalisierte Bestände in Forschung, Lehre und 
schulische Vermittlung ein? Welchen Beitrag können die verschiedenen 
Online-Aktivitäten zu den "Digital Humanities" beisteuern? Welche Ideen für die 
Vermittlung von Geschichte in Museen, Bibliotheken und Medien werden daraus 
entwickelt? Welche Schwächen und Stärken in den bisherigen und den neuen 
Online-Angeboten sind festzustellen? Neben der kritischen Diskussion und 
Reflexion in den Panels stellen sich innovative Projekte, die sich dem Thema 
"Erster Weltkrieg" mittels digitaler Formen nähern, einer breiten 
Öffentlichkeit vor.
Collection Days:
An beiden Tagen finden parallel zur Konferenz zwei Collection Days sowie eine 
Ausstellung statt. Besitzen Sie Fotos, Briefe, Postkarten, Souvenirs oder 
andere Gegenstände aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg? Haben Sie eine Geschichte oder 
Anekdote über jemanden zu erzählen, der involviert oder betroffen war? Kommen 
Sie zum Collection Day. Dort können Sie mit Experten sprechen, die die 
mitgebrachten Objekte identifizieren und fotografieren und die dazu gehörige 
Geschichte aufnehmen. Die von Ihnen mitgebrachten Dokumente erhalten Sie 
natürlich sofort zurück.

Conference - Collection Days - Exhibition - Portal launches:
"Unlocking Sources - The First World War online & Europeana", 30./31.01.2014

2014 will mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, which will 
be commemorated worldwide. On 30 and 31 January 2014 the Staatsbibliothek zu 
Berlin will host the conference "Unlocking Sources - The First World War online 
& Europeana" (www.unlocking-sources.eu/<http://www.unlocking-sources.eu/>) to 
mark the commemoration.

During the two-day international conference representatives from research and 
education and the interested public will discuss the mediation of history 
through the Internet. The discussions will focus on the digitized holdings of 
Europeana - and how these resources can be used, for example in research or in 
history lessons at school.

Focus of the conference

Representatives from research and teaching, mediation of history and education 
will discuss the possibilities and limits of digital access to material about 
the First World War and review - from different perspectives - the 
contributions which have been made in the past years.

The conference will focus on the use of digital sources: How do digitized 
holdings fit into research and teaching and the transfer of knowledge in the 
classroom? What can different online activities contribute to the "Digital 
Humanities"? Which ideas can be developed regarding the mediation of history in 
museums and which media can be developed for this purpose? What are the 
strengths and weaknesses of the existing and the newly created online 
offerings? There will be a critical discussion and reflection at the panels and 
innovative projects approaching the theme "First World War" via digital media, 
will introduce themselves to a broad public.
Collection Days
On 30th and 31st January 2014, two Collection Days take place at the 
Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin in parallel to the conference. Everyone with 
documents or objects from the First World War such as diaries, notebooks, 
letters, photographs, leaflets and posters is urged to come to a roadshow to 
share their story and have their documents digitised. Visitors will be welcomed 
by experts who will identify and photograph the objects, and collect the 
individual family stories relating to them. The documents will then be returned 
to contributors.

results in 2014 is an occasion for the presentation of the new digital
