Sechste Kuopio-Konferenz findet statt in Basel (14. bis 16. März 2018)

Save the date! Vom 14. bis 16. März 2018 findet an der Öffentlichen Bibliothek 
der Universität Basel die 6. Kuopio-Konferenz zum Thema Aufbewahrung von 
gedrucktem Material statt. Unter dem Titel A Matter of Trust: Cooperative Print 
Storage and Shared Archiving Initiatives werden Lösungen zentraler und 
dezentraler Aufbewahrung vorgestellt: Expertinnen und Experten aus Europa, 
Australien und den USA berichten von ihren Projekten und Erfahrungen und zeigen 
auf, dass die Archivierung von Print sich zum digital turn komplementär 
verhält: Je umfassender die digitale Bereitstellung von Inhalten wird, desto 
wichtiger wird die koordinierte Aufbewahrung von gedruckten Inhalten. 

Die Konferenz konzentriert sich auf zwei zentrale Aspekte: Kooperative 
Archivierungs-Einrichtungen als Dienstleister, und Initiativen zur verteilten 
Archivierung. Detaillierte Blicke auf die Verfahren sind wichtig: wie werden 
solche Initiativen aufgesetzt, was sind die Verpflichtungen der Mitglieder, wie 
können die so aufbewahrten holdings sichtbar gemacht werden, findet eine 
Dedoublierung statt? Was sind die Kosten, und welche Geschäftsmodelle sind 
entwickelt worden? Das sind Fragen, die Praktikerinnen ebenso wie die 
Entscheidungsinstanzen immer wieder beschäftigen - es sind diese Details, die 
das Leben schwierig machen.
Zudem wird die internationale Publikation Repositories for Print: strategies 
for access, preservation and democracy vorgestellt werden; sie wird von Steve 
O'Connor und Pentti Vattulainen als Herausgeber verantwortet und erscheint zum 
Zeitpunkt der Konferenz bei De Gruyter. 

Nach fünf erfolgreichen Konferenzen in Finnland findet die sechste Konferenz 
zum Thema nun in Basel statt. Das gibt auch Gelegenheit, diese Konferenz mit 
einem Besuch in der Kooperativen Speicherbibliothek Schweiz stimmig 
abzuschliessen.

Sixth Kuopio Conference held in Basel, Switzerland (14 to 16 March, 2018)

Save the date! The 6th Kuopio Conference on aspects of print storage will be 
held in Basel, Switzerland, from Wed, March, 14, to Fri, March 16, 2018; the 
venue is at the University Library. Its title is A Matter of Trust: Cooperative 
Print Storage and Shared Archiving Initiatives, and it will present questions 
and solutions of central and distributed storage. Experts from Europe, the USA 
and Australia will talk about their projects and show that archiving print is 
complementing the digital turn, not competing it: the coordination of printed 
material storage on a national of even international level will become more 
important, as more and more digital content will be available. 

The conference will focus on two main aspects: Cooperative storage facilities 
as service providers, and shared or distributed archiving initiatives. The 
presentation of detailed procedures will be important: how are shared 
initiatives set up, what are the obligations of its members, how can holdings 
be made visible, does de-duplication take place? What does it cost, and what 
business models are developed? Questions that keep practitioners as well as 
deciders busy - it is the nitty gritty details that make life interesting.
Additionally the book Repositories for Print: strategies for access, 
preservation and democracy will be presented. It is edited by Steve O'Connor 
and Pentti Vattulainen, and it will be published by De Gruyter just in time for 
the conference! 

Five successful conferences were held in Kuopio, Finland. The sixth now takes 
place in Basel, Switzerland. This also allows a visit to the still new 
Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland - a perfect way to bring the conference 
to an inspiring end.
